Grief Isn’t Just for When Someone Dies: It’s for Every Kind of Loss

ree

Hey friends—grief isn’t only about death. Nope. It can sneak into our hearts in all sorts of unexpected ways. Losing a job, ending a relationship, drifting away from a friendship, big life changes—even dreams that never quite took flight. Let’s explore how these losses matter just as much—and how we can care for our hearts through them.

What Is This Extra Grief, Anyway?

Whether it’s a breakup, a job that ends, a friendship that fades, or a life shift you didn’t see coming—your grief is real. Grief is a natural response to loss and ANY loss can cause grief, including those non-death ones like losing a job or a relationship, or even a cherished dream.

This shape-shifting grief shows up in lots of ways—sadness, anger, fatigue, stomach aches, even trouble sleeping. It’s valid, it’s real, and most importantly, it matters.

The Types That Often Go Unnoticed

  • Non-finite grief (Grieving the life you expected) This is grieving not what was taken from you—but what never happened. A path you planned doesn't pan out—and that loss of possibility is deeply painful.

  • Ambiguous or disenfranchised grief These are invisible, unacknowledged, often dismissed by others: like feeling grief over a pet, a job, or a dream that quietly disappears. Many don’t even realize they’re grieving at first.

How to Hold These Feelings (Gently)

  1. Name the loss—and give yourself permission to feel it. Even if someone else thinks “it could have been worse,” your grief is real. You deserve time to acknowledge and honor it.

  2. Let yourself mourn—and then shift to rebuilding. The Dual-Process Model of Coping shows us that healing isn’t linear. Sometimes we’re knee-deep in heartache, and other times we stretch toward something new. It’s okay. That ebb and flow—that oscillation—is how we heal.

  3. Create your own ritual or meaning. Whether it’s writing, drawing, planting seeds, lighting a candle for a past job or lost dream—meaning-making helps us find purpose even in grief.

  4. Reach out—and let others recognize it. Because many of these losses fly under the radar, we miss small funerals for hopes and routines. Talking to someone—preferably someone trained, like a counselor—validates what you're feeling and helps shift you forward.
