Self-Compassion This Season: How to Embrace Gratitude, Growth, and Grace for Yourself

Tis the season to give thanks and acknowledge the things you are grateful for. As you practice gratitude this month, remember to extend it inward. Allow yourself to recognize the efforts you put in daily, the challenges you’ve overcome, and the growth you’ve achieved this year. Self-compassion can be a challenge at times but practicing it as a daily habit can be helpful, especially during stressful times like the holidays.

Here are some strategies for showing self-compassion:

·         Focus on paying attention to your inner voice. When you notice self-criticism, try to shift to a kinder, more supportive tone, as if you were talking with a close friend.

·         Give yourself permission to pause and take breaks, even if just for a few minutes to recharge.

·         Practice gratitude for your achievements, no matter how small. You can keep track of your daily/weekly/monthly accomplishments.

·         Embrace imperfections and acknowledge that mistakes are part of being human. View them as opportunities for growth.

·         Develop a phrase to repeat in moments of stress of self-doubt, like “I am enough,” “I am doing my best,” or “It is okay to feel this way.”

·         Do something that helps you feel safe and comfortable like mediating, listening to music, reading, or gardening.

·         Practice forgiveness by letting go and offering yourself forgiveness. Acknowledge what you’ve learned, and allow yourself to move forward without guilt.

Just as you are thankful for your loved ones, remember to be thankful for YOU. Acknowledge your strengths, forgive your mistakes and show appreciation for all the ways you care for yourself.
