Appreciating Change: Growth Lives Outside of Comfort

Let’s be real—change is hard. Even when it’s something we wanted, it can stir up resistance, fear, or a deep sense of discomfort. But here’s the thing: that uneasy space where change lives is also the same space where growth happens.

Why Change Feels So Uncomfortable
Our brains love predictability. Familiar routines, habits, and environments feel safe because they’re known. When something shifts—a new job, a move, a relationship shift, even a new season—it can trigger a sense of dissonance: the feeling of “this doesn’t match what I know.”
That mental tug-of-war is uncomfortable. But it’s also the starting point of transformation.
Comfort vs. Growth
Think of comfort as a cozy chair. It’s warm, familiar, and feels nice to sink into. But if we sit in that chair too long, we stop moving. Comfort without challenge often leads to stagnation.
Growth, on the other hand, usually requires stepping into something new: a new habit, a new mindset, a new role, or even a new way of looking at yourself. It rarely feels “easy” in the beginning—but it always stretches us into who we’re becoming.
The Gifts of Change
Resilience: Every change you navigate builds emotional strength for the next one.
Perspective: Change helps us see life from new angles and find opportunities we wouldn’t have seen otherwise.
Possibility: Sometimes change closes one door only to open another—leading to relationships, careers, or experiences that bring more alignment and joy.
Identity: Change reshapes our understanding of who we are and what we’re capable of.
Learning to Appreciate Change
Acknowledge the discomfort. Instead of pushing it away, notice it: “Yes, this feels uneasy—and that’s normal.”
Name what you’re losing and what you’re gaining. Change often holds both grief and excitement. Honoring both makes space for growth.
Shift the story. Instead of “I hate change,” try “I’m growing through change.” Small language shifts can bring hope.
Focus on small steps. You don’t need to embrace the whole mountain at once—just the next step forward.
Lean into support. Sharing the journey with friends, mentors, or a counselor lightens the weight of change.
